・How map of the oldest subway has established
At first, the maps was complicated with rivers, bodies of thames water, trees and parks
The station was all crammed together at the center of the map.
The map itself was geographically accurate but not efficient.
・Inventor: Harry Beck
Engineer who had been working on and off for London Underground.
He knew people using the tube do not really care what is happening aboveground, they just wanted to move from one place to another.
→Thus, he planned ideas of
-
using only horizontal, vertical or 45 degrees visual and spaced the stations equally
-
space the stations equally
-
make every station colour correspond to the colour of the line
It was successful and made Londoners’ life easier.
・The most common design nowadays all over the world
This really became the template of modern metro maps including Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Washington DC and etc…
To sum up,
Harry Beck wasn’t familiar with professional knowledge area of maps but his design attracted tons of people.
Whats important in designing (can be applied to other sectors) are
-
focus: focus on who you are doing for, why you are doing
-
simplicity: consider what’s the shortest way to deliver the need?
-
thinking in a cross-diciplinary way: Who would have thought that an electrical engineer would be the person to draw one of the most common map in the world?
